And Now They BurnApril 8, 2009 at 3:53 pm | Posted in News | Leave a comment
Is it open season on thrift shops or what? Does someone up there have it in for our beloved bargain havens? A California thrift shop has burned to the ground under mysterious circumstances, according to the Atascadero News: “Electrical engineers are combing through wiring, continuing to search for the origin of the North County Christian School Thrift Shop fire…. The 10,000-square-foot structure, located at 6420 El Camino Real, burned in just two hours’ time shortly after 10 p.m. March 6. NCCS and thrift shop administrator Dr. Bob McLaughlin said the school is now estimating merchandise loss at around $150,000 with a higher dollar value expected when the 400 to 500 consigners’ merchandise is added. The only items salvaged from the fire was a safe, which had $1,000 in it, and a forklift, he said. McLaughlin said that income generated by the shop, estimated to be $90,000 for the 2008-09 school year, is important to the school’s students.” How long before we assemble a volunteer army of thrift-shop protectors? I’ll take the early-morning shift.
